I am fortunate enough to have an international background having been raised in England, The Netherlands, France, Portugal and Canada and am fluent in English, Dutch and Portuguese. I believe this world view experience contributes to my ability to work with clients from any cultural background and enables me to have an understanding of the challenges a lack of belonging and the feeling of being uprooted can bring.
I am a full member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice. When not practicing as a therapist, I am committed to ongoing professional development and am currently undertaking postgraduate research into how death anxiety plays a dominant, but largely unconscious role, in influencing our lives.
The foundations on which Living at Choice, my practice, are based are a combination of this humanistic model merged with existential thoughts, ideas and philosophy and applied in a practical, jargon free way. As human beings, we have choice in every single moment of our lives and it is through harnessing the power of this choice that we can start to take full responsibility for our experiences.
The Living at Choice vision is particularly relevant to the increasingly meaningless nature of the modern world. Not only have we lost many of our traditions and myths, we have lost the collective values and beliefs that gave us a safe framework within which to live our lives. At Living at Choice we believe that the healthy response to this loss of collective meaning is in forging our own values and meaning based on our own choices.Qualifications & Training I have a background of 10 years experience in the field of personal growth, therapy and applied psychology and have been formally trained in both psychodynamic and existential therapy. I am experienced in working with a wide range of clients dealing with short-term challenges through to deep-rooted issues requiring longer term therapy.
My academic training includes a post-graduate diploma from The Australian College of Applied Psychology in Brisbane, Australia, and more recently a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy from The University of London. In addition to my academic background, I have been specifically trained in the field of human relationships and sexuality and have experience of working with both couples and individuals in sensitively exploring difficult issues in these areas. As well as working with sexuality and relationships, I have experience of working with clients affected by depression, anxiety, abuse, self esteem and cultural issues to name a few.Experience Whilst living in Australia I worked as a systemic relationship counsellor with Relationships Australia, the largest family and relationship counselling provider in the country.
In the UK I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for the NHS as well as for Anxiety UK. I am currently running a private practice in Brighton, as well as working for The Rock Clinic.Fees An initial consultation costs £20 (£30 for couples) and will last approximately 40 minutes.
Thereafter I charge £35 (£50 for couples) per therapy hour (50 minutes).
