My counselling training was primarily Humanistic which ensures the client is always at the centre of everything I do. Consequently the pace at which we would work together is driven by you as client.
It is my belief that counselling or psychotherapy work best when the client and therapist are truly at ease with each other. Finding someone who is a perfect fit is not always easy. Contact a few therapists until it feels right for you. Interview the counsellor, find out how they will work with you, what they can do to help.
It would be entirely your own decision whether we work in a brief solution-focused way or if you would prefer a more open-ended way of working. We would discuss your specific needs during our assessment session so that we can decide together what you could expect from counselling with me.
We are often a product of our life experiences and sometimes we are unable to move forward because we have not come to terms with past events: you may be interested to know that it is not necessary to relive these events in order to move forwards.
Depending on your needs, our work together may include CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which can help by changing the way we think about things. We might also discuss the thoughts behind the theory of Transactional Analysis (TA) if it is appropriate. Gestalt therapy encourages us to stay in the 'here and now' and that can be an useful starting point for some.
If there is a particular problem that is having a negative impact on a client's every day life, we would usually work with that first and then make a decision whether to deal with any underlying reasons behind the problem. In this way, it is the client's decision whether the work is done over a brief time in a solution-focused way or whether longer term work is more suitable for their needs.
The key to the way I work with clients is you, the client. It is my belief that counselling sessions should be as individual as you are.
Taking the first step can be the hardest in anything we do. But you will never have to take that first step again. Trust your instincts, choose a counsellor and trust the process. Sending you my best wishes for a successful journey, Corinne. Qualifications & Training The Humanistic Counselling Diploma I studied was modular and included the additional approaches CBT, Gestalt, and TA.
