NLP offers ways to take charge of thought processes, which puts the therapist in the position of being more of a teacher. If you've had a bad experience in childhood that is creating difficulties in your present life, I will explain how to remember that event, not as you experienced it at the time, but as though you were an adult looking at that scene as though it had been filmed. This allows you to judge cause and effect, who had power and responsibility, as you were not able to as a child. This in turn helps you to have a different response to the memory, one which will change its effect in the present.

Or take that inner, self-critical voice that can drag you down. CBT will tell you to rationally understand that it is incorrect. A therapist working on 'thinking positively' will tell you to make affirmations that praise and encourage you. I will help you to listen to it, notice the tone, the volume, the other qualities of the voice, and invite you to experiment with changing these qualities.

One that often brings a smile is to suggest that you simply speed it up, until it begins to sound like Mickey Mouse, then like an unintelligible squeak. Training your mind to do this stops its emotional effect, and 'clears a space' for you to begin to think in more realistic ways about who you are, what your situation is, and how you could act effectively instead of being paralysed by self-criticism.
