My primary therapeutic model is Relational Transactional Analysis but working with me you may well be unaware of that: you won't need to adopt a technical vocabulary or particular theoretical model in order to express yourself. While I may myself use analytical models to inform my understanding of the issues you bring, key to our work together is the relationship between us through which I hope you will make better sense of your situation, and make the changes you want.
Unlike the traditional doctor-patient model this relationship is one of equality, collaboration and transparency. My job is to sit with you, to listen and to understand where you are and what you want to change - and to help you achieve that change. We attempt to explore and understand your experience together, and I openly share my theoretical understanding when I think it helpful or when you ask.
Working with couples, my role is to facilitate the relationship between you, in order to help you first decide how you want to move on and then either develop your partnership together or separate as respectfully and healthily as possible.
I am experienced working both short-term and long-term, and am happy to work in any appropriate time-frame. The length of counselling, and indeed what we talk about, is up to you. I do request, however, two sessions' notice of ending in order to finish well rather than end abruptly.
Below is a little more information about how I work, along with some answers to questions about counselling and psychotherapy in general. If you would like to arrange a consultation or have any further queries, please feel free to call me in confidence.
What are the sessions like?
I provide an empathic, confidential and non-judgmental environment in which I hope you will feel safe to explore the issues you want to address. I work with my clients face to face, sitting opposite each other in comfortable chairs. Sessions are 50 minutes, at a regular time each week. There is no predefined agenda for each session; the space is for you and the issues you want to bring. I abide by the Ethical Framework of the BACP and by the ethical standards of the Metanoia Institute, UKCP and EATA.
What are counselling and psychotherapy?
Sometimes we may want to change something in our lives. We may feel troubled in some way or somehow unable to achieve what we want. We may find ourselves in a familiar and yet distressing situation or unhappy in a relationship. Counselling & psychotherapy are 'talking therapies' that can help people address such issues and thereby help them to change their lives. Counselling & psychotherapy are for anybody who wants to change something about their life and yet seems unable to do so. You may feel anxious or depressed, experience difficulties in a relationship, or just feel dissatisfied or unhappy and not know why. You may have suffered a bereavement or trauma or a change in circumstances, or you may want to find a resolution to something that troubles you from your past. People of different ages and cultures seek therapy to help themselves live as they want to.
What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
While there's no commonly agreed clear distinction, the term "counselling" might refer to therapy aimed at dealing with transient problems in life, and "psychotherapy" to the resolving of more deeply rooted difficulties in relating to others and the world around us.
How do counselling and psychotherapy work?
When we seem unable to be how we want to be, or feel stuck despite perhaps being well-placed to get what we want, it is sometimes because, without being aware of it, we are limited by thoughts and feelings which aren't somehow appropriate to our situation. The process of therapy often involves developing an awareness both of such self-limitations and the options actually available to us. It may be helpful, too, to explore the historical roots of these emotions and beliefs. Through such insight and resolution, particularly within the context of an honest, trusted relationship, it may be possible to free ourselves from the past we carry with us and to live truly autonomously in the present.
How long does therapy take?
The length and depth of therapy is determined by you and the sorts of changes you wish to make. Some clients may work with a therapist for a matter of weeks, and others for several years. You decide what you want to address and for how long you want to work.
What is Transactional Analysis?
Transactional Analysis is a collection of particularly clear and useful models for understanding ourselves and our relationships, and for making sense of our behaviours, thoughts and feelings. It can be used as a Cognitive Behavioural therapy, helping us to understand the connection between our beliefs and behaviour, or equally it can be used to inform us about the unconscious patterns that underlie less tangible problems in our lives and relationships.Qualifications & Training I hold a Diploma in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Metanoia Institute)
