Approach: psychotherapy is a collaborative process where therapist and patient work together on understanding the past. We build on this understanding, working towards feeling stronger and more resilient when facing life's current and past challenges. Sometimes we use the wisdom of psychoanalysis to enhance this process, at other times we provide respectful acceptance, containment and support for the struggles that people unpredictably and inevitably experience from time to time.
Services offered: I am able to provide psychotherapy for a wide range of psychological and emotional problems. It may be that you do not have a specific issue to focus on. However the areas listed below are issues that I often work with:
Depression and Anxiety
Compulsive Behaviours, OCD
Anger
Relationship Difficulties
Abuse and Trauma
Body Image and Identity issues
Eating Disorders, Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity
Addictive Behaviours (including alcohol)
Bereavements and Loss
Self-Esteem and Confidence
Psychological Support with Physical Health Problems and Disability.
Longer-term Personality issues
Sexual and Gender issues
My training is Psychoanalytic, and draws on many theoretical and evidence based therapeutic models - from classical to Freudian to more modern Object Relations and Attachment Theory. I also draw on and integrate the understanding of Neuroscience and Social and Cognitive Behavioural Psychology. This helps to provide a realistic, adaptable and flexible approach to developing a respectful working relationship and understanding of each individual person, and the numerous factors that influence our lives.
It is important to work collaboratively with people, in a supportive, non-judgemental and confidential space; to look for understanding and work towards developing healthy and useful defences in our psychological world.
Psychotherapy often focuses on difficulties in relationships, both in the past and present. Therapeutic exploration discovers how relationships may have been shaped by our early experiences and important people in our lives. Where there may have been unhappy times in early experiences sometimes have an unwanted and negative impact on our current lives psychotherapy can often help with this, by strengthening our inner world, and finding new ways of dealing with life's challenges.
