Nicola Talbot PG Dip Psychodynamic Counselling, BSc Psychology
How I work:
My approach is psychodynamic and my orientation is relational and systemic. This means that in our work together we will explore patterns of relating to family, friends, both past and present, as well as looking at the relationship that evolves between us. The issues that are brought to therapy may often arise from problem areas in life that could be discussed between friends. The difference is that I will not be judgemental or give advice but the material will remain confidential between us and can be used as a tool for both of us to gain access to unconscious relating patterns that have evolved since childhood. This has the effect of gaining control and freedom for choice and change in our lives.
This work may extend to an exploration in feelings beyond human relationships to feelings about the earth, animals and nature. Ecotherapy is an area of growing interest in the world of psychotherapy, combining the practice of psychotherapy with an exploration of the way we interact with the environment. I am currently researching the role of nature in rehabilitation as part of an MA in Psychotherapeutic Counselling.
Initially you would contact me to arrange an assessment where we both see if we could work together. There will be no obligation for you to proceed with further sessions and if I feel that I do not have the skills to help you I will suggest other options. If we decide to proceed then we would arrange a weekly 50 minute slot. How many sessions would on individual needs and would be discussed in our initial meeting. The development of a relationship is an important aspect in counselling and for this reason I generally suggest a minimum of six sessions. Every person is different, sometimes just one session will help and other times counselling can continue for several weeks or months. Equally important in the relationship is planning a good ending and so we may set up a regular review to assess how the counselling is helping.
