Why choose brief therapy?
Brief therapy is a practical and down to earth approach. By avoiding lengthy analysis of problems and focusing more readily on the issues you want to discuss it can save you time and money and help you find solutions to make the changes that you want. Brief Therapy doesn't require you to come every week for months or to commit to a number of sessions. You come to see me when you want, when people require more sessions often they book their second appointment two weeks later or they call me when they want to rebook, it is really up to you.
How does it work?
As your therapist I would explore with you not only the changes you want to make but also the skills and resources you already have. For example talking about the times when the problem did not occur or was less bothersome can show us part of the solution. Exploring with you the kind of future that you want can also help you to think about the steps that you can take towards achieving this future.
More about Brief Therapy
Brief therapy offers a whole different way of looking at people and how they function.
Its main underpinning assumptions are that people know how to be well, they can change profoundly and this change can be achieved rapidly. Because people's behaviour always makes sense if its context is included it follows that brief therapy rejects the idea that people are crazy or dysfunctional. This to me is of fundamental importance.
In brief therapy, it is not necessary to explore the many possible causes of problems to facilitate change, the focus is more pragmatic in understanding the consequences of the problem and how progress can be made. We can say that brief therapy ideas are at the root of positive psychology.
Brief therapy is becoming better known in the UK but there is still a long way to go. The solution focussed approach is used in the NHS and some Primary Care Trusts are training their counsellors in brief therapy. For example I have recently been contracted to give training to counsellors working for Ealing Primary Care Trust.
Research has shown that 83% of individuals attending solution focused brief therapy made lasting changes in less than five sessions. Following up into how well people maintained their progress also showed a high rate of success. (See website)
About me
I have been practising counselling and psychotherapy for twenty years now. For the past 15 years I have developed my brief therapy approach and I find it particularly exciting to see how people improve and move forward rapidly. I enjoy making a difference to people's lives tremendously.
I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist for twenty years now. I have worked in private practice and in the NHS. Throughout my career I have continued to incorporate new skills into my practice.
As well as the brief therapy approach for example I also use some CBT techniques, and the Narrative approach.
I have used my psychotherapy skills to develop and deliver training to counsellors and psychotherapists, doctors, nurses and health visitors, and complementary health practitioners. I have also facilitated team building sessions for the NHS. I recently won a contract with Ealing PCT to train their counsellors in Brief Therapy skills.
Following my recently published article*, I am thrilled that Relate has invited me to join their external panel to help in the development of their training and services.
I have lived in this country since 1981 but I was brought up near Paris so I am very happy to offer sessions in French if required.
