What to Expect during Counselling, Psychotherapy
At our initial session we will discuss what brings you to therapy, what your hopes and expectations are and how I can meet them. If you choose to go ahead, we will agree on the time and frequency of our meetings, discuss the likely length of therapy, and payment details.
I offer either short (up to 12 sessions) or long term therapy. You will be given a recommendation, but the decision on how long you are prepared to be in therapy will be yours. Though a couple of sessions might clarify certain points for you, normally it would be better to commit to at least 6 sessions.
Sessions are usually fifty minutes long, taking place at the same time every week or once forthnightly for a couple. The introductory session and missed sessions are charged at the full rate unless I receive 48 hours notice of cancellation.
The content of therapy is strictly confidential. However, if I have strong concerns about your own or anothers safety, I am required to inform your GP or relevant authority. On such exceptionally rare occasions, I will discuss my need to act with you first.
During couples therapy I aim to facilitate a dialogue during which both parties can be equally heard, acknowledged and validated by each other. That might take some time and I would recommend a couple to book at least a 1. 5 hour slot per-session.
I work integratively I draw from different therapeutic approaches, employing those most useful to the specific needs of each individual or couple. Because I specialise in Existential Therapy, I support a belief that while your life might have certain limitations, constraints and a given past, there is still a choice in how you view and live it. Your personal dilemmas and crises may present an opportunity not only to take stock of your life, but to rediscover strength, contentment, hope and joy. Paradoxically, by acknowledging difficulties, you can make them less overwhelming.
Therapy is not about getting diagnoses and the cure formula, it is about opening up the possibilities in a life which sometimes feels stuck with no way forward.
While I will be providing confidential and a judgement free environment, we will explore; what brings you to therapy, where and how you are now; where do you want to be; what obstacles are in your way and what can be done to remove them. In order to get what you want and be who you want it is essential to know how and where you are, as well as understanding how you got to be where you are. The understanding and acceptance of yourself will lead to uncovering new directions, fresh energy and changes.
