I use a Humanistic approach to counselling and psychotherapy, specifically working with Transactional Analysis (TA).
Transactional Analysis (TA) is built on the premise that we are all born OK and it is our environment that shapes us, we have the capacity to think and therefore to change if we want to. TA was founded by Eric Berne, a renowned psychiatrist, whose aim was to make the language of psychotherapy easily accessible to the client, creating an equal relationship between the client and the practitioner.
The theory to TA's approach is that our personalities are made up of three ego states: the Parent, Adult and Child. The Parent represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours we have internalised from our parents or carers. The Adult represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours autonomously used to rationalise the here and now reality, almost like a computer. The Child represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours stemming from our past experiences which return within us in the present, usually out of awareness.
Another part of the theory is that at a very early age we decide upon an unconscious life plan called a script which is influenced by our upbringing. Sometimes our script can lead to an unhealthy life style, including the repetition of non-beneficial or destructive behaviours.Qualifications & Training Diploma in Transactional Analysis Counselling awarded by Metanoia Institute, West London.
