I am a counsellor with many years experience of working in a multitude of settings with people of all ages and backgrounds covering a vast array of problems. As a result of my experience and extensive training, my specialisations are as follows; anxiety, bereavement, obsessive/compulsive disorder, disability, illness, stress, relationship problems, depression, anger, trauma, problems from childhood, abuse, lack of direction in life, low self esteem/lack of confidence, employment or unemployment issues. I work with young people, couples, families as well as individual adults. I work short-term or long-term depending on the client's needs. I operate a 50 minute hour. My counselling room is in Henley-on-Thames, very easy to find.
As an integrative counsellor I make use of all the various theories and schools of thought in the counselling and psychotherapy field depending on what is appropriate for each client. For instance I may use the cognitive/behavioural approach or psychodynamic or solution-focused. As I am continually going on short courses to supplement my foundation of learning in this field, I am always adding to my skills and ideas about how to help each client. Once a person telephones me for counselling, I am very determined to arrange a date to see them as soon as possible. The initial session is an assessment to see what the problems are and then draw up a list of aims so that the client knows what he/she/they wish to achieve from counselling.
People will benefit from counselling if they feel stuck, unhappy, distressed, confused and fed-up. Counselling tends to only work if the person themselves wants it but not if they have been told by a relative or friend that they must go and find a counsellor. It is a process in which a skilled practitioner facilitates a person in need, to explore their situation and thereby generate some insights and ideas in order to make them feel better and improve the situation they are finding difficult. This process can take 1 or 2 sessions, or much much longer depending on each person or each set of problems. The whole point of counselling is that it is therapeutic, cathartic and helpful. It enables a person to clarify their problems and thus by identifying them in a clearer way, it is then easier to deal with them and so that forms a springboard to feeling better.
