Art psychotherapy is a recognised treatment for many kinds of mental health problems and emotional distress. If you suffer from any of the following difficulties, you could find this form of therapy beneficial.
Depression
Anxiety
Stress
Eating problems
Self-harm
Trauma
Abuse
Bereavement and loss
Psychosomatic symptoms
Work-related problems
Relationship difficulties
Art psychotherapy is a psychological therapy which enables self-reflection and self-discovery through art-making, facilitated by a qualified art psychotherapist. It is similar to any other form of psychotherapy in that it is a confidential and effective treatment for many kinds of emotional distress. The client is enabled to make sense of and resolve her/his difficulties both through the healing nature of the art-making process, and by talking issues through with the therapist.
It can be particularly helpful to people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings because they cant find the words to do so, or who express their distress in unhelpful ways. On the other hand, people who are perhaps too adept at using words (as a way of avoiding feeling), or those who are not quite sure what is wrong, also find that art therapy reaches the parts that other therapies cannot reach.Qualifications & Training In addition to my art psychotherapy training, I have completed additional specialist trainings in psychodynamic psychotherapy, in group therapy, and the Goldsmiths MA in Advanced Clinical Practice in Art Psychotherapy. I am currently training in energy psychology, a modality which involves working with the body's energy systems (meridians and chakras) to help release stored-up trauma. I also have seven years experience providing training therapy for trainee art psychotherapists.
I am registered with the Health Professions Council and am a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (with which I am an approved Private Practitioner and Clinical Supervisor). My practice is in line with HPC Standards and the BAAT Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional PracticeExperience I have twenty years of experience as an art psychotherapist, including seventeen years working in the NHS Mental Health Services. Initially from an art and design background, I worked as a lecturer and exhibiting artist before training as a therapist.Fees £48 per hour's session.
