I offer short and long term psychotherapy and counselling to individuals. I am an experienced UKCP registered North London based psychoanalytic psychotherapist offering individual counselling, psychotherapy and ecotherapy.
At the heart of my work is the belief that individuals benefit from being helped to restore in themselves a sense of integration, connection and place, through becoming familar and at ease with themselves and their inner world and recognising their interconnectedness with other people, places and the natural world.
My background is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and mentalisation based therapy (MBT). These approaches aim to improve a person's relationship with themselves and others through increasing self awareness. The focus in MBT is to help people to recognise and understand their own feelings and the feelings of others, more effectively.
'Mentalisation' is a fairly recently defined term which describes the capacity we all have for understanding our own and others feelings and behaviour. In situations of emotional stress this ability can be compromised and for people who have had trauma or difficulties in childhood this can happen more frequently and can at times lead to self destructive ways of behaving or relating. Mentalisation is something that can be done more effectively through awareness and practice, fostered in the context of a secure relationship with the therapist. Through focussing on, and practicing mentalising in the context of therapy people can be helped to be better able to maintain or regain their mentalising capacity in their lives.
I have an interest in ecopsychology and seek to attend in my work to how individuals are influenced by their socio-cultural and environmental context - as well as their own personal life experiences.
I have an eclectic approach to working with people and will utilise a variety of theories and practices to suit the particular individual. In an initial meeting I develop a sense with the client of which way of working would be most suitable. The approximate expected length of treatment can be decided at this time, or discussed in the first few sessions if necessary. Sessions last for 50 minutes and are in my consulting room in Crouch End.
My practice is a 15 minute walk from Finsbury Park tube station and five minutes walk from Haringay overground station. Sessions are available in the early mornings and early evenings Monday to Thursday.
I can also offer clinical supervision as well as therapy and supervision via webcam, after an initial face to face meeting.
