I work from an integrative and interpersonal perspective, combining psychodynamic insights with flexible and pragmatic techniques suited to individual clients and their preferences. We start by exploring the current problem in the context of your familiar ways of relating and patterns of emotions.
In short-term therapy it is essential to have a clear focus and to work collaboratively to achieve change in that area, which may in turn ease other aspects of distress. Often people feel confused and overwhelmed by the complexity of their difficulties at the start of therapy, but in many instances relatively few sessions can clarify the key issues and begin a process which brings relief.
People frequently start counselling with reluctance and a certain amount of anxiety - perhaps worrying that they will be considered weak or foolish for having difficulties. But if the therapeutic relationship feels right, and you really allow yourself to engage with the process, it can be the beginning of some of the most fascinating conversations of your life. Therapy offers a rare opportunity to think about yourself, your relationships and your life. It aims not only to relieve distress, but to help you understand yourself and those close to you better, opening the possibility of a more reflective and fulfilled life.
Areas of work:
I offer sensitive, experienced and confidential help for a wide range of personal difficulties.
The most common problems are depression, low self-esteem, insomnia and anxiety or stress in various forms.
I am also particularly interested in working with people who have long-term health problems that affect their emotions - chronic illness, IBS, cancer and other physical conditions where mind and body interact.
Women are often especially vulnerable and prone to anxiety or depression during or after pregnancy or childbirth, and counselling can be an invaluable support during this time.
Infertility, miscarriage and abortion can all have a devastating psychological impact, which may be eased by the opportunity to explore feelings in counselling
Menopause is a stage of transition that involves physical and emotional changes many women are not adequately prepared for. Individual or group therapy can help feelings of loss and depression, and assist women to feel more in control of the bewildering physical symptoms.
