I am a clinical psychologist and I provide psychological therapy for clients in the NHS and in my private practice. I am trained to integrate many psychotherapeutic models and design a therapeutic intervention to suit each individual client I work with. This means that the intervention I design for you, would attend to the aspects of your life that you would like to address and I will adapt the style of the therapy to suit your skills and strengths.
Psychological therapy begins with a period of assessment, where relevant information is gathered about the reason you are coming to therapy, your background and your current circumstances.
This information is used to develop a formulation, which is a joint understanding of why your difficulties have developed, what is maintaining them and what will help you to overcome them. The formulation often takes the form of a diagram, using a psychological framework to make sense of your problems.
During therapy, the formulation will be continually developed and reviewed as the knowledge that we have about your difficulties increases.
The formulation phase of the therapy is psychologically beneficial as a better understanding of your difficulties leaves you feeling less overwhelmed and more in control of your life. Your formulation is something that you can take away with you and use to continue your progress after the therapy has ended.
Your formulation will direct us to the aspects of your life that need work. The psychological interventions that I suggest are highly individual, but can include: helping you to connect to your emotions and developing your ability to regulate your feelings; identifying relationship patterns which are unhelpful and supporting you to make changes in how you relate to and communicate with others; teaching skills in mindfulness or assertiveness; developing your ability to be compassionate towards yourself and accept aspects of your life that you cannot change.
The psychotherapeutic models I draw from include Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Compassion Focused Therapy.
The different difficulties I am trained to work with include:
Anxiety
Depression
Health related emotional difficulties
Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Relationship difficulties
Stress
Grief
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Self harm
Self esteem and confidence issues
